Here are some tips to help you plan:

  • Book your tour in advance to secure your spot.
  • Consider the tour duration and pick-up/drop-off locations.

With careful planning, your Auckland city tour can be a memorable experience.

Auckland:

Auckland is one of the must-visit and activities city, and the Auckland ferry terminal in CBD, Viaduct Harbour, Harbour Bridge night lights view, Wynyard Quarter, fish market, Skycity, Auckland War Memorial Museum, Mission Bay, Auckland Zoo are trendy tourist attractions

Further away from Auckland, the following places are good to go for day trips

Matakana:

Drive time: 1 hour one way from Auckland City

The food paradise of Matakana is just a short drive North of Auckland. We suggest you head here on a Saturday morning to time your trip with the famed Matakana Village Farmers Market.

Matakana also has several hillside wineries where you can sample fresh wines from the source. If you can stretch your budget further, many offer a several-course dining experience paired with wines.

New Zealand produces lovely wines; what better place to sample them than the vineyard?

Sculptureum: A World of Art, food and Wine.

An hour north of Auckland and just outside Matakana is Sculptureum, a world-class tourist attraction.

There is something for everyone: three sculpture-filled gardens, six art galleries, a vineyard, an events space, and a Rothko restaurant and bar.

Hamilton:

Drive time: 1 hour 30 minutes one way from Auckland City

Hamilton is often overlooked on the New Zealand tourist map. Still, it has several attractions worthy of your time – particularly Hamilton Gardens, the Rocky Horror Show Riff Raff Statue and the Mighty Waikato River. Plus, Hamilton had some of the best bars and restaurants on the North Island, outside of Auckland.

Waitomo:

Drive time: 2 hours 30 minutes one way from Auckland City

Do glowworm caves and black-water rafting sound like your type of activity? New Zealand is known for its extreme sports activities

Waitomo's natural geography and cave systems have been utilised to create a unique underground adventure – thousands of glowworms light up the Glowworm Caves, whilst the vast Ruakuri Cave hosts limestone formations (stalactites and stalagmites) and underground rivers.

Hobbiton:

Drive time: 2 hours one way from Auckland City

One of the top tourist attractions is the Hobbiton Movie set tour

THE VILLAGE OF HOBBITON MOVIE SET

In the heart of the Waikato region, you can explore the lush pastures of the Shire with a guided walking tour of Hobbiton.

The Hobbiton Movie Set was an essential location for The Lord of Rings and The Hobbit.

Rotorua

Drive time: 3 hours one way from Auckland City

Follow your nose to find Rotorua. Renowned for its geothermal activity, the downside is the city has a lingering smell of sulphur, currently wafting through it. Still, the upside is that it is home to some of the best thermal spas in New Zealand and several geothermal parks.

One of our highlights was looking out over Rotorua Lake whilst soaking in the hot pools at the famous Polynesian Spa – we also took tea on the lawn at the Rotorua Museum.

MOST VISITORS' FAVOURITE PLACES ARE Wai O Tapu, Te Puia, Skyline Gondola, Luge, and Redwood Forest tree walks. However, if you want to avoid paying admission to see thermal pools and geysers, there is a more petite, free-to-visit geothermal park smack bang in the centre of downtown Rotorua.

Although this can quickly be done as a day trip from Auckland, we recommend staying here for at least a night so you can indulge in some spa activities and explore some thermal parks a little further out of town.

The Coromandel Peninsula:

We also considered including the Coromandel in this day trip from Auckland list, but honestly, it is worth more than just a short visit. The Coromandel is a favourite city escape for most Aucklanders, many of whom have holiday homes (baches), especially near Cathedral Cove and Hahei / Hot Water Beach.
